SİNAN TÜRKYILMAZ HACETTEPE UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF POPULATION STUDIES TMIDPS – FIELD SURVEYS: TMIDPS – FIELD SURVEYS QUALITATIVE RESEARCH QUANTITATIVE SURVEYTMIDPS QUALITATIVE RESEARCH : TMIDPS QUALITATIVE RESEARCH To gain a deeper understanding of people’s life conditions before, during and after the migration process To gain a better understanding of the effects of migration on different population groups (age, sex, returned/not returned) To reveal the different expectations and attitudes regarding the future To help in developing the methodology of the QUANTITATIVE survey.Qualitative Research- In-depth Interviews: Qualitative Research- In-depth Interviews Guideline for In-depth Interview with Institutions: The public institutions and NGOs which are providing services to internally displaced people Guideline for In-depth Interview with Persons 1. Returned IDPs 2. Non-returned IDPs 70 in-depth interviews representing different age and sex groups conducted in Diyarbakır, Batman, Van, İstanbul, Adana and MersinQUANTITATIVE SURVEY: QUANTITATIVE SURVEY TMIDPS is designed to make inferences on migration and internally displaced people in Turkey. TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN: TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN Since the survey especially focuses on IDPs, it is appropriate to divide the survey population into three main domains: “Migrant sending provinces” domain composed of 14 provinces of Return to Village and Rehabilitation Project (RVRP) which experienced dense internal displacement, “Migrant receiving provinces” domain composed of 10 provinces which received highest immigration from 14 provinces and fall outside the RVRP region. “Other provinces” composed of remaing 57 provinces of Turkey TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN: TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN The “migrant sending provinces” domain consists of 14 RVRP provinces in the East and Southeast Anatolia (Adıyaman, Ağrı, Batman, Bingöl, Bitlis, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Hakkari, Mardin, Muş, Siirt, Şırnak, Tunceli ve Van). These provinces were firstly divided into Urban-rural strata where 10.000 population size is the cut off point as in Demographic and Health Surveys. Moreover, a sperate stratum called, returned villages was created for the villages and other settlements in rural areas which receive return migration. Since these provinces are also destination provinces, they receive migration too.TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN: TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN The “migrant receiving provinces” domain was constructed by using the information concerning “residence 5 years before the census day”, “place of birth” and “place of residence on census day”. The most 10 provinces which receives dense migration from 14 RVRP provinces forms this domain. These provinces are İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Mersin, Bursa, Antalya, Malatya, Manisa and Kocaeli. After selection of 10 provinces, The densely migrated quarters of sub-settlements of these 10 provinces which receive migration from the RVRP provinces formed the “dense migration stratum”. The remaining urban and rural settlements of 10 provinces also formed other urban and rural strata of this domain. TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN: TMIDPS SAMPLE DESIGN The 57 provinces of Turkey after excluding the 14 RVRP provinces and 10 dense migrant receiving provinces consisted the “other provinces” domain. Within these 57 provinces, 8 provinces were selected probablisticly. These provinces are Tekirdağ, Muğla, Burdur, Bolu, Çankırı, Aksaray, Kars and Giresun. This domain were also divided into urban and rural strata..
